Whether you are going to work, going to a wedding or just feel like looking fancy, its good to know the age old technique of how to tie a tie. At this point in your life, you should not be asking your girlfriend to help you!

Many men look at ties quizzically. How does this fabric contraption work?

Well, that’s what Iam about to explain to you. Iam going to walk you through two simple ways to tie a tie for any occasion. That’s right, no more clip-on ties for you!

1. Four in Hand Knot

Here is a super basic knot that you should know how to tie. It is very simple, and it will get the job done.

Start off with the wider end hanging down, and make it so about three quarters of the wider end is hanging lower than the narrower end.

Pull the wide end below the narrow end in the direction that allows the bottom of the wide end to be facing outward.

Wrap the wide end around the narrow end so the top of the wide end is facing away.

Tuck the wide end through the loop closest to your chest. The back of the wide end should be facing away.

Tuck the wide end through the front loop, with the front of the wide end facing away. Pull down and then adjust.

There you have it! Your first knot.

2. Half-Windsor Knot

Here is another knot that you can do easily, but will still look classy. As with any knot, practice it a few times and you’ll get it down.

Start off with the wider end hanging down, and make it so about three quarters of the wider end is hanging lower than the narrower end.

Cross the wide end over the narrow end with the front facing away from you.

Pull the wide end behind the narrow end so the back is facing away from you.

Wrap around so the front of the wide end is facing away from you.

Pull the wide end up through the loop closest to your chest.

Tuck the wide end down into the other loop and pull downward. Adjust the tie.

Awesome! You now know two super simple ways to tie a tie. Its time to throw away those clip-ons.
